Viñas prefiloxéricas: el tesoro enterrado en la arena de La Horra

At the end of the 19th century, a tiny insect from America came close to wiping out European wine. Phylloxera — an aphid that attacks the vine’s roots — devastated millions of hectares of vineyard in France, and later in Spain, forcing almost all of the continent’s vines to be uprooted and replanted on American rootstock, resistant to the pest.

Almost all. Because there were corners phylloxera could not reach. And some of those corners are in La Horra.

The insect that couldn’t swim in sand

Phylloxera moves underground, from root to root, through the cracks that form in compact soils. But sandy soils have a providential property: sand does not crack, and it collapses around the insect, preventing it from advancing. In soils with a high sand content, the pest simply does not thrive.

In La Horra there are plots of loose, sandy soils where vines planted before the arrival of the plague went on living as if nothing had happened. While the whole of Europe replanted, here the vines kept bearing fruit on their own roots — ungrafted, as winegrowers say. These are the pre-phylloxera vines: survivors of more than a century.

What makes a century-old vine special

An old vine is not just a historical curiosity. It is another way of making wine. Its deep roots, after decades searching for water, explore layers of soil a young vine could only dream of reaching, which translates into consistency in dry years. Its yield is low — sometimes less than a kilo per vine — but each cluster concentrates what the plant no longer spends on growing. And bush-trained, without trellising, as has always been done in La Horra, it regulates itself with a wisdom that only the years can give.

Our ungrafted vines also preserve Tinto Fino as it was before phylloxera: a living library of the variety that no nursery can replicate.

Our heritage of old vines

At Dominio de Montelahorra, more than half the vineyard is over 50 years old, and we keep century-old vines and pre-phylloxera plots planted on those sandy soils that outwitted the plague, between 800 and 850 metres of altitude. From these plots come our top wines — such as Valezar o El Canto del Ángel — donde el Tinto Fino habla con su voz más antigua.

A legacy that cannot be replanted

You can build a new winery in two years. You can plant a vineyard in an afternoon. What you cannot do is manufacture a hundred-year-old vine: only time can give you that, and time, in La Horra, played in our favour. That is why we say our greatest asset is not in the winery, but buried in the sand.

Hoy la Ribera del Duero es una de las denominaciones de origen más prestigiosas del mundo. Pero en los años setenta nada de esto existía: no había denominación, no había contraetiquetas, y la mayor parte del vino de la zona se vendía a granel, sin nombre y sin memoria. Que hoy exista la D.O. Ribera del Duero se debe al empeño de un puñado de bodegas que creyeron en esta tierra antes que nadie. Esta es su historia — y también la nuestra, porque estuvimos en aquella mesa.

The Ribera before the Ribera

Que en esta zona se hace vino desde hace siglos lo demuestran las bodegas subterráneas medievales que perforan el subsuelo de pueblos como La Horra, Roa or Sotillo. But making wine was one thing; claiming it was quite another. In the mid-20th century, the Ribera winegrower sold grapes or bulk wine, and the prestige went to other regions.

Hubo excepciones que señalaron el camino, y proyectos cooperativos como el nuestro — fundado en 1957 por 218 familias de La Horra — empezaron a embotellar cuando embotellar era una rareza. De hecho, entre 1968 y 1970 instalamos la primera embotelladora de la Ribera del Duero burgalesa.

1978: the meeting in La Horra

The first formal step towards the denominación was taken in 1978, at a meeting held precisely in La Horra. Eight wineries from the area — ours among them — sat down to study the possibility of creating a Denominación de Origen that would protect the winegrowing potential of the region.

Between 1980 and 1982, preparatory meetings followed in La Horra, San Esteban de Gormaz and Aranda de Duero to define the boundaries and the regulations of the future Regulatory Council.

1982: the Regulatory Council is born

En 1982 se oficializó por fin el Consejo Regulador de la D.O. Ribera del Duero. Nuestra bodega fue una de las ocho fundadoras, a las que se sumaron otras cuatro en aquel arranque. Doce casas pioneras para una denominación que hoy agrupa a más de trescientas.

La Horra’s weight in that founding became clear a few years later: when the Council’s first plenary was elected by vote in 1989, both the president and one of the board members were natives of our village.

What it meant (and what it means)

The denominación changed everything. The Council’s numbered back label became a guarantee of origin and quality, and Tinto Fino went from anonymous grape to the banner of a region. For us, recognition came early: in 1985, after receiving the Silver Bacchus, we achieved our first export.

Almost five decades after that 1978 meeting, we are still making wine a few metres from where it was held. Every bottle that leaves Dominio de Montelahorra carries, besides the Council’s back label, something that cannot be printed: the memory of having been there when it all began.
